Amazon accounts often hold more than just a Prime membership. Gift card balances, pending orders, Subscribe & Save deliveries, Kindle books, digital music, and stored payment methods all need to be addressed when someone dies. This guide covers everything families need to know about handling an Amazon account after a death.

What to Check Before Cancelling Anything

Do not cancel the Amazon account immediately. First check for gift card balances, pending orders, and refundable subscriptions. Closing the account first may forfeit these assets permanently.

Before taking any action, identify what the account holds:

How to Contact Amazon About a Deceased Account

Amazon requires direct contact with their customer service team for bereavement account handling. There is no online form — you must contact them by phone or chat.

  1. Go to amazon.com → Help → Contact Us
  2. Select "An order I placed" or "Account Settings" as the topic
  3. Choose chat or phone support
  4. Explain you are contacting regarding a deceased account holder
  5. Provide the account email address and your relationship to the deceased
  6. Have a death certificate ready — Amazon may request you email it

Recovering Gift Card Balances

Amazon gift card balances are considered estate assets. As executor, you can request the balance be transferred to an estate account or issued as a check. Amazon requires executor documentation (Letters Testamentary) for this process. Contact Amazon's bereavement support team directly and specifically request gift card balance recovery.

Cancelling Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime can be cancelled with a death certificate. Amazon's bereavement team can process this immediately and issue a pro-rated refund for any unused portion of an annual membership. For monthly memberships, the next billing cycle will be the last charge after cancellation is confirmed.

Amazon Prime Refund Policy for Estates

Amazon typically issues pro-rated refunds for annual Prime memberships cancelled through their bereavement process. The refund is calculated based on the number of months remaining in the membership year. Keep this in mind when timing your cancellation request.

Handling Kindle Books and Digital Purchases

Like Apple, Amazon digital purchases are licensed rather than owned. Kindle books, digital music, and video purchases cannot be transferred to another account. They exist only for the lifetime of the account. Once the account is closed, access to these purchases is permanently lost — they cannot be recovered by family members or executors.

The Amazon Store Card

If the deceased had an Amazon Store Card (issued by Synchrony Bank), this is a separate financial account that must be handled through Synchrony Bank's estate department — not through Amazon. Contact Synchrony Bank directly with a death certificate and executor documentation to close the card and address any outstanding balance.

Subscribe & Save and Recurring Deliveries

If the deceased had active Subscribe & Save orders, these will continue shipping and charging until cancelled. Contact Amazon customer service to cancel all active Subscribe & Save subscriptions. If deliveries have already shipped, Amazon will provide return labels for items that arrive after the account holder's passing.
