What to Check Before Cancelling Anything
Before taking any action, identify what the account holds:
- Gift card balance — Amazon gift card balances are estate assets and can be recovered

- Amazon Store Card balance — a separate financial account requiring separate handling

How to Contact Amazon About a Deceased Account
Amazon requires direct contact with their customer service team for bereavement account handling. There is no online form — you must contact them by phone or chat.
- Go to amazon.com → Help → Contact Us
- Select "An order I placed" or "Account Settings" as the topic
- Choose chat or phone support
- Explain you are contacting regarding a deceased account holder
- Provide the account email address and your relationship to the deceased
- Have a death certificate ready — Amazon may request you email it
Recovering Gift Card Balances
Amazon gift card balances are considered estate assets. As executor, you can request the balance be transferred to an estate account or issued as a check. Handling Kindle Books and Digital Purchases
Like Apple, Amazon digital purchases are licensed rather than owned. Kindle books, digital music, and video purchases cannot be transferred to another account. The Amazon Store Card
If the deceased had an Amazon Store Card (issued by Synchrony Bank), this is a separate financial account that must be handled through Synchrony Bank's estate department — not through Amazon.
