Netflix is one of the most common subscriptions in American households — and one of the most straightforward to cancel after a death. At $15.99 to $22.99 per month, it's worth addressing promptly to prevent ongoing charges to the estate.

Option 1 — Cancel With the Account Password

If you know the Netflix login credentials, cancellation takes two minutes: log in, go to Account, select Cancel Membership. This is the fastest method and works without any documentation.

Option 2 — Cancel Without the Password (Bereavement Process)

Netflix accepts bereavement cancellation requests through their customer support. The process:

  1. Go to help.netflix.com and contact Netflix support via chat or phone
  2. Explain you are contacting regarding a deceased account holder
  3. Provide the email address associated with the Netflix account
  4. Provide your name and relationship to the deceased
  5. Netflix may request a death certificate — have a scan ready to email
  6. Request cancellation and pro-rated refund
Netflix is generally cooperative with bereavement requests and will cancel the account without requiring formal executor documentation in most cases. A death certificate and your relationship statement is typically sufficient.

Can You Get a Refund?

Yes — Netflix typically issues a pro-rated refund for the unused portion of the current billing period when cancellation is processed through their bereavement team. The refund goes to the payment method on file — if this was the deceased's credit card, it may appear as a credit on the estate credit card statement.

Option 3 — Cancel Through the Credit Card

If you cannot reach Netflix through either method above, cancelling the credit card that funds the subscription will stop all Netflix charges. Netflix will suspend the account after the payment fails. This is a blunt instrument — use it only if other methods fail.

Netflix Family Plans and Extra Member Slots

If the deceased shared a Netflix account with living family members, consider whether those members want to retain access under a different primary account before cancelling. Switching the primary account holder requires access to the account — contact Netflix support if you need to transfer account ownership.
