LinkedIn is often one of the last platforms families think to address after a death — yet an active professional profile continuing to appear in search results, receive connection requests, and show up in people's networks can be both confusing and painful for colleagues and family alike.

What LinkedIn Offers

Unlike Facebook, LinkedIn does not offer memorialization. The only option is profile removal. LinkedIn will remove a deceased person's profile upon verification of death and family relationship.

LinkedIn profiles sometimes appear in Google search results for years after death if not removed. Colleagues may continue sending connection requests without knowing the person has passed. Removal provides clarity and closure for the professional community.

What You Need

The Process

  1. Go to LinkedIn's Help Center and search "deceased member"
  2. Find the form for reporting a deceased member's profile
  3. Provide the profile URL — find this by searching the deceased's name on LinkedIn
  4. Select your relationship (immediate family, extended family, friend, or colleague)
  5. Provide proof of death
  6. Submit — LinkedIn reviews and removes the profile, typically within 1-2 weeks

LinkedIn Premium Subscriptions

If the deceased had LinkedIn Premium, Sales Navigator, or Recruiter, these are paid subscriptions that continue charging until cancelled. Contact LinkedIn support directly to cancel these subscriptions with a death certificate. LinkedIn will issue a pro-rated refund for annual subscriptions in most cases.

What About Their Professional Content?

Articles, posts, and recommendations published on LinkedIn are permanently deleted when the profile is removed. If the deceased published professional articles or thought leadership content that colleagues or the family want to preserve, save this content manually before requesting removal. LinkedIn does not provide a data download option to family members.
