Spotify accounts continue charging after death and don't close automatically. For families, Spotify is typically straightforward to address — but there are some nuances worth knowing, particularly around family plans, podcast content, and whether playlists can be preserved.

What Needs to Be Addressed

Can You Save Their Playlists?

Spotify playlists are not directly transferable to another account. However, there are two options for preserving them:

Public playlists on Spotify can be followed by other users even after the account holder dies, as long as the account remains active. If preserving their playlists matters to your family, do this before closing the account.

How to Cancel Spotify Without the Password

  1. Go to support.spotify.com and select Contact
  2. Choose "Account" as the help topic
  3. Contact via chat or email
  4. Explain you are requesting cancellation for a deceased account holder
  5. Provide the account email address and your relationship
  6. Submit death certificate if requested
  7. Request cancellation and refund

Spotify Premium Family Plans

If the deceased was the owner of a Spotify Premium Family plan, all family members on that plan will lose access when the account is closed. Surviving family members who want to continue using Spotify will need to create individual accounts or establish a new family plan under a different owner. Alert family members before cancelling the plan so they can set up their own accounts.

Spotify for Artists

If the deceased was a musician with releases on Spotify, their music remains on the platform after their death. The Spotify for Artists account can be managed by an estate representative or record label. If the deceased was an independent artist, contact Spotify for Artists support to transfer account management to the estate or a designated representative.

Spotify is one of dozens of accounts we handle together.
